What is Immunity?

Immunity is the ability of the body to fight infections. There are three types of immunity viz., innate, adaptive, and passive. Innate immunity includes barriers, such as skin and mucous membranes, that protects the body from harmful substances from entering the body. It is the first response of the body’s immune system to a foreign substance. Adaptive immunity occurs in response to being infected with or vaccinated against a microorganism. The body makes an immune response, which can prevent future infection with the microorganism. It will remain intact during the entire lifetime of a person. Passive immunity occurs when a person receives antibodies to a disease rather than making them through his or her own immune system. Passive immunity provides immediate protection but only lasts a few weeks or months.

Ayurvedic Perspective

Immunity in Ayurveda is not immunity against a specific Infectious agent or disease such as polio or rubella for which Western medicine provides immunizations. The conventional concept of immunity is somewhat nearer to Vyādhikşamatva. Ayurveda, which implies a resistance against the loss of the integrity, proportion and interrelationship amongst the individual’s bio-energies (dosas) and tissues (dhātus). Thes homeostasis among the supporting elements of the  body is known as dhātusāmya. This is the true meaning of immunity in the Ayurveda. It follows then that the Ayurvedic concept of immunity is intricately interwoven with the concepts of nutrition, agni (digestive fire), bala (bio-strength), dhātuposana (tissue formation) and ojas (immune strength).

Resistance to the disease or immunity against disease is of two kinds i.e. the one which attenuates the manifested diseases and other variety prevents the manifestation of diseases. Thus, it is clear that con- cept of immunity was familiar at that time and has been analyzed in detail in the form of Vyādhiksamatva in various Ayurvedic texts.

Bala / Vyādhikşamatva are the state, which opposes the pathogenetic factors and immunity against diseases is of two kinds i.e. the one which attenuates the manifested disease and other variety prevents the manifestation of diseases.

Various factors which contribute towards vyādhikşamatva are normal dosas, equilibrium state of dhātus (bodily tissues), normal agni (bio-fire), patency of srotas (micro-channels) etc. During certain conditions or due to certain factors even unwholesome (ahitakara) dietary practices do not produce dis- ease immediately. All unwholesome (ahitakara) food articles are not equally harmful, all dosas are not equally powerful; all persons are incapable of resisting diseases.
